Today a group of North Carolina students and members of Asheville Rising Tide descended on Duke Energy Headquarters in Charlotte, NC to protest against their proposed 800mw Cliffside coal power plant. Despite police and private security already on the scene two students managed to lock the front entrance shut with a bike lock to send the message of “No New Coal” to Duke Energy. Police managed to intervene before the two were able to lock themselves to the doors and were arrested within minutes after refusing to move, however the door remained locked after they were put in police custody. read full story / add a comment

Charlotte, NC – At 12:30 today, two Warren Wilson College students dressed as polar bears were arrested while blockading the entrance to Duke Energy’s headquarters in downtown Charlotte. The students are demanding that the company stop its plans to build the new Cliffside coal-fired power plant, and are joined by concerned citizens dressed as Santa Claus and his Elves. Santa's Elves presented Duke with a Christmas wish list of clean air, sustainable energy, and energy efficiency initiatives. "The bad kids get coal in their stockings, and we're here to say that we don't want any new coal," said Keith Glendinning, a local resident. read full story / add a comment
